I really enjoy writing about music so I think from now on I'm going to use this space to chart my musical experiences and share my favourite song of the week.

So I've been really curious about Azealia Banks and I've been listening to her mixtape FANTASEA and one of my favourite songs of the mixtape is “NEPTUNE” featurin another rapper called Shystie.

I am so hooked on this right now!

The song sounds like a massive underwater party with two vivacious larger than life mermaids at the heart of it. I love the aquatic effects the reverbs and echoes create as it gives the song a mystical feel, very much in line with the fantastical concept behind her mixtape. The contrast between Azealia’s smoothness and Shystie’s edgier and harder raps is also amazing. Actually, I just really love it when two female celebrities work together.

Isn't the cover art great as well? I just love it when musicians incorporate strong visuals and imagery into their music. It's kinda theatrical and makes them so much more interesting than your typical crooners.

Oh and I had no idea what a mixtape is until I carried out my research today. It is basically a collection of songs which have been compiled and put together, usually in a thematic fashion to reflect the personal tastes of the listener. It is often believed that an artistic statement can be created through the carefully selecting the songs and putting them in a specific sequence. It is really a reference to the older days where people had to record music on tapes and as there's no option for you to select the tracks you want, you have to make sure that they flowed and transit into each other according to the artistic effect intended.

Well I'm always making thematic playlists on my iPod and making sure that the songs make sense in the order they are placed an transit nicely into each other. I even take this seriously as a hobby sometimes and I always thought it was considered the making of set lists but I guess now I know that my hobby is making mixtapes!
